The photograph was taken just after the birth of baby Yakini in November 1999. A difficult birth meant his mother rejected him, meaning he had to be raised by hand by the zoo staff. The photographer David Caird took thousands of photographs over a six month period and has published two books of photographs about him. Yakini is now healthy and happy, living in a new ‘bachelors’ enclosure at the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria.
